Sustainability Group Meeting ~ March 2007
Coincidently as the Sustainability Group met for a meeting in mid March, Her Majesty's government were launching their Climate Change bill, As you are already aware we have accepted the challenge to reduce our 'Carbon Footprint' on both ecological and theological grounds, to say nothing about the potential economic savings.
Global warming is the most serious environmental problem facing the world today and we have identified the Church Centre as part of that problem. Our theological response is to make our Christian life a witness to God's love for the earth. The pragmatic approach to this problem requires educational and careful planning to make our Church Centre more attractive and give our mission environmental legs.
Some decisions and recommendations were made at our meeting to move forward.
It has been decided that the building will have cavity wall insulation installed immediately.
You may have noticed already that the Church Centre has now got low energy light bulbs and we thank you that more than £170 has been donated by you towards the cost.
It has been decided that savings will occur if we install passive infra red detection sensors which will control the existing lighting in the toilets i.e. the light will come on when the toilet is entered. In the gents systemisers will dramatically reduce water consumption in the urinals,
A recommendation will be made to have the Coffee Shop area decorated in pale attractive colours,
Estimates have been received to double glaze and reframe all the windows and doors in the Church Centre (main area) and it has been recommended to replace the entrance doors at both North and South. These doors will be more welcoming and attractive.
We are to investigate further the change to a green energy Supplier,
The future holds some more exciting prospects of reducing our Church Centre and of course our own domestic creation of 'greenhouse gases'. If you have computer access have a look at Operation Noah and www.shrinkingthefootprint.cofe.anglican.org
